Partneringwith the Media reaching out policy makers on South South Cooperation and BeltRoad Initiative and SDGs

SDG1, SDG 17

SDG Story

Itis a difficult challenge to ensure that citizens are aware of the workorganizations and individuals are doing around the world in support ofsustainable development. Even more difficult is motivating these same people toact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) themselves. As such, the mediaplays an important role by raising awareness of the 2030 Agenda and involvingmore people in the process.

AtUNDP, we have been working with media outlets to raise awareness on our work, and on the challenges that remain. This includes wonderfully successfulcampaigns with Visual China and LinkedIn; with CCTV, CGTN, Phoenix and otherswe continuously engage to share with millions of people the success stories andchallenges.

Wewould like to highlight one media outlet in particular, which we have had along standing partnership, People’s Daily. Through their media platform, themessage of UNDP as well as UN as a whole has reached more Chinese people thanever, exceeding 700 million viewers. The UN Secretary-General’s exclusiveinterview reached 3.8 million Chinese people within the first 48 hours.Exposure on this scale is a tremendous help in UNDP’s mission to promote actionand awareness regarding sustainable development throughout the country.

Community-based conservationfor white-headed Langur

In 2014, with thesupport of the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Program and theCritical Ecosystem Protection Fund (CEPF), the Guangxi Biodiversity Researchand Conservation Association (BRC) worked to support sustainable development inQunan, Guangxi Autonomous Region. The goal was to protect endangered wildlifein the community.

Qunan has 12% ofthe world’s White-headed Langur, one of the rarest primates, and listed by IUCNas Critically Endangered.

Together with theAdministration of White-headed Langur National Nature Reserve, BRC pushed forregistration as a small protected area. In 2014, the local governmentrecognized Qunan as a community conserved area (CCA).

BRC has played animportant role in preserving Qunan’s environment. They work with the communityto conduct surveys on economy, culture and ecology. They have also providedtraining, enhanced the community’s self-governance, and promoted naturaleducation and eco-farming.

Due to theseefforts, Qunan received a boost in tourism. In 2017, the community received 600visitors and tourism revenue increased by 190,000RMB. Most of the income goesto host families and the remainder is invested in CCA management and communitypublic affairs. After designation as a CCA, the population of the white-headedlangur increased from 85 (2014) to 130 (2017).
