Despitetheir growing number, youth are often excluded from participation indecision-making process, leaving them socially and politically marginalized andfrustrated.

However,in recent years, a growing recognition is evident among policy makers and practitionersthat youth are an important source for positive social change and technologicalinnovation. Now that awareness of the importance of youth participation hasbeen raised regarding the “what” and “why” of youth participation, more work isnow needed to address the “how.”

InChina, UN-Habitat initiated People-Oriented Urban Public Space Programme in2016. As one of the component of the programme, UN-Habitat uses Minecraft toinvolve youth in the design of urban public spaces through the partnership withMojang, Block by Block.

InNov 2017, UN-Habitat collaborated with Wuhan Land Use and Urban SpatialPlanning Research Center (WLSP), and worked with Jianghan District Governmentof Wuhan City, implemented a three-day Block by Block workshop to NorthwestLake Cultural Square Public Space Pilot Project. The young people who worksurrounding the park, were brought together to visualize their ideas inMinecraft, and present to the district government officials and professionaldesigners of WLSP who can incorporate the common ideas to the public spaceconstruction in the Northwest Lake Cultural Square.
